2017 Proms Youth Choir – 16-21years
Vocal development opportunity to sing in the 2017 Proms Youth Choir for singers aged 16-21!
The Cornwall Music Education Hub Vocal Strategy has been given a wonderful opportunity to participate in this year’s celebrated Proms concerts taking place in the Royal Albert Hall London in July.
The BBC Proms Youth Choir, established in 2012, offers talented youth choirs the opportunity to perform at the world’s greatest classical music festival, the BBC Proms, while developing their choral skills during a four-day residency in Birmingham led by international Chorus Master Simon Halsey.
This year existing youth choirs, such as the Cornwall County Youth Choir (managed by CMEHub) across the UK have been invited to take part in the BBC Proms Youth Choir 2017 alongside 36 singers from the BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy. The group will then perform at the BBC Proms on Friday 14th July 2017. This offer however is not restricted to current members of the Cornwall County Youth Choir.
The PYC is open to any young people aged 16 to 21 who can demonstrate:
A love of singing
A voice with potential
Enthusiasm and willingness to learn and develop in a choral setting, as part of a team
Commitment to take part in all sessions and learn the piece
We are keen to meet young established singers as well as those who have musical interests but possibly haven’t sung in anything like this before, or even don’t currently sing in a choir, but who very keen to experience this type of event in order to provide them with an outstanding opportunity to venture into further choral opportunities or which will enhance their current performance CV.
Through a series of workshop sessions with choral conductor Angela Renshaw, Cornwall County Choir Mentors and Cornwall-based singing specialists, plus four members of the BBC Singers (the BBC’s full-time professional choir), singers in the PYC will learn about singing in a choir and develop vocal technique in preparation for the BBC Proms residency and performance at the BBC Proms. Although helpful, singers do not need to be able to read music to be part of the PYC, but they should have a good musical ear. Singers will be taught the music as suits the needs of the group (both learning the music by ear and using scores), and we will provide audio tools for singers to practice their part at home.
There will be a full residency starting on Monday 10th July 2017 in Birmingham with the other PYC singers, and this will be directed by Simon Halsey. Accommodation and catering are paid for but there will be a small contribution towards the coach travel.
We will be staying together with other choirs taking part, in Birmingham in provided accommodation on Monday 10th July, Tuesday 11th July and Wednesday 12th July, from here we will travel down to London by arranged coach on Thursday 13th July where we will rehearse with the professional orchestra and stay in rooms at Imperial College London. We will rehearse in morning and afternoon of Friday 14th July and perform in the opening night of the 2017 Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
Following the concert on Friday 14th July, we will travel back to Cornwall overnight and arrive back in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Due to media restrictions at this point I am not able to divulge any further information regarding repertoire nor details of the orchestra and conducting who will lead the chorus, other than to say it is a huge event and will be amazing!
At this point I would like to start gathering names, details of voice etc from all interested parties. We have 48 spaces available which will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
We will then issue a rehearsal schedule which will begin from end of April 2017 onwards and will take place mostly on some Sunday afternoons from end of April onwards. You are expected to work hard to learn your own part in between the rehearsals but will be provided with teach-CD and score to enable to you do this. The nature of the work isn’t something that you will necessarily be able to pick up at choir rehearsals alone.
The date that we must keep and be available to attend is Friday 23rd June 09.00-2.30pm when the members of BBC Singers will visit Cornwall to work with us.
A point of rule which is crucial for all those wishing to participate – all singers taking part must be born on or before 31.08.2001. I hope that’s clear.
Please get in touch if you need any further details. All interested parties please respond before and no later than Friday 24th March 2017.
