City of Lights

Hippo by University College Falmouth at City of Lights 2008

KEAP has been involved with Truro's City of Lights lantern parade for a number of years. Last November’s event was the biggest ever with over 20,000 people in Truro watching the parade which was combined with the switch on of the Christmas lights and fireworks. Twenty schools and community groups participated with their own lanterns and over a hundred musicians including the newly formed Shortlanesend School band.

Neil Scott from Totally Truro said, “This was the best event I have ever witnessed in Truro - it was spine-tingling! A wonderful event that showcases the City of Truro and its capacity to embrace and engage with the creative, residential, visitor and business communities.”

Treyew, Archbishop Benson and Threemilestone all ran their own events as did Kennall Vale in Ponsanooth, St Day and Stithians. In fact winter light celebrations are illuminating a whole host of villages and towns across Cornwall. The artists and organisers of City of Lights have reconstituted to create an organisation which can support evolving outdoor celebrations further a field.

This new organisation will be able to support in many areas including artistic construction and workshops, music and dance and also all those nitty gritty issues around health and safety and partnerships. One of the key projects in the year will still be to deliver Truro City of Lights.

City of Lights 2009 is partnering with the Truro History Project which is a 2 year Heritage Lottery funded programme to make the history of Truro more accessible. Work will include a website wth sound recordings and research and a portable exhibition. Project Manager Fiona Young is very happy to support schools in getting more involved with the History project through City of Lights and can host guided walks around Truro to show how Truro was the most important port in Cornwall, discover the leats and waterways, and unearth the middle row of shops in Boscawen St. For more information about Truro History Project contact Fiona at fionayoung80@hotmail.com or 01872 245508

This year's event is on Wednesday 18 November.
