Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and The Lizard Schools at Eden
Over the past few months children in the ten schools on The Lizard have been working together to create a new musical composition which was performed at The Eden Project on May 20th.
Community Musician Andy Baker from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chris Morgan from Music and Dance Education based in Marazion, as well as Jo Cole a primary music teacher from St Michael’s school, Helston and Sing Up have been supporting and inspiring the children and teachers to come up with a new composition inspired by the book “Dinosaurs and all the Rubbish” by Michael Foreman. This story has been chosen because of its environmental message which is fitting for a performance at Eden.
The project is part of Kernow Education Arts Partnership’s flagship programme to embed the arts in Extended Services. Amanda Harris, Director of KEAP said, “This has been a wonderful opportunity for the young people to create new music, work with superb musicians and to perform on a large scale in an inspiring venue.”
Over three hundred children performed together along with professional string players from the BSO, and attracted a great audience of Eden visitors. The feedback from the children was fantastic, ‘I really enjoyed listening and working with the BSO and they inspired me to start the violin’ ‘In the future I would love to be in an orchestra!’ ‘I enjoyed this experience and I think it would be fun to do it again! I can’t wait for my next piano lesson!’
Linked to this project was a short tour of the BSO mini strings who performed to young people in Callington, Humphry Davy in Penzance, Mullion and The Roseland Schools.
This project has been supported by Cornwall Council Creative Services and Extended Services, Sing Up, the Eden Project and the Orchestra.
