Chartwell Dutiro uses the mbira as an instrument of education, as well as music, to encompass both traditional and contemporary perspectives; history,culture and identity, geographic location and enviroment are all drawn out through the study of constraction and playing. Running in parallel. Chartwell competently sets the mbira and it’s music into context, essential in moving away from the ‘exotic’ associated with musicians from the South.
