GONAMENA - Book now for this amazing play set in Caradon Hill

A TIMELESS STORY OF FAMILY AND CHANGE SET IN THE GONAMENA VALLEY, CARADON
HILL

A new play by Simon Parker

I am sure many of you remember last year's wonderful Smokin' Chimneys event, well Gonamena is the theatrical equivalent to that - the coming together of a community from young to old to put on this amazing new play at Sterts Theatre from the 6th June till the 22nd July (dates below).

There are over 100 people involved in the production and the majority of the actors, creative team and technical crew are from the immediate Caradon Hill area and are working alongside professionals from Cornwall to bring this moving and captivating tale to life.

CORNWALL'S THEATRE EVENT OF THE SUMMER

Tickets are now on sale for one of this summer's most epic and evocative plays. 'Gonamena', the timeless story of a Cornish family and community living through an extreme time of irreversible change, is certain to stir
and involve audiences of all ages and certainly shouldn't be missed.

Set in the stunning Gonamena Valley and the mining landscape of the Caradon Hill area, the story centres around the home of one family as they face up to the epic challenge of rapid transformation, and the accompanying loss and hope, during the mining boom and bust of the late 1800s. Written by renowned
local writer, Simon Parker, the play is based on real events and evokes the emotional turmoil and extremes of opinion amongst the frontier-like existence of the many thousands of people that descended on the valley at
the height of the copper ore mining period.

A trip to see the production also offers the opportunity for people to visit and explore this significant, and very beautiful, part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

'Gonamena' is directed by Simon Harvey with original music composed and conducted by Simon Dobson and is produced by Sarah Pym for The Works (Dance and Theatre Cornwall Ltd).

5th UK Taiko Festival – Exeter Northcott Theatre - 3/4 July 2009

The UK Taiko Festival, now in its 5th year, is a fantastic opportunity to experience a wide range of taiko styles performed by groups young and old from across the UK, and beyond.

Taiko is a style of drumming that originated in Japan and as recently as ten years ago the best chance of seeing it in the UK was through visits by Japanese touring groups such as Yamato and Kodo. That's changing, as home-grown taiko is spreading across the country.

The opening concert at the Northcott Theatre on Friday 3rd July features four groups. Taiko Meantime (London) will be fresh from performances at Glastonbury and the F.A. Cup Final. Wadaiko Tokara are coming all the way from Japan. Kagemusha Taiko (Exeter) have previously performed in the BBC Proms and have toured to great acclaim in Italy as well as the UK. iSHHO (Glasgow) will open the show with an exciting fusion between taiko and electric instruments.

For those working in the arts and education perhaps the second day of the Festival will be of most interest – when youth groups come from all over the country to perform together in a spirit of celebration, not competition. The National Youth Taiko Concerts at the Northcott Theatre on Saturday 4th July are a focus for the growing youth taiko talent in the UK. Significant groups this year include Oku Nojo Daiko from Oak Farm Community College in Farnborough, and Kagemusha Junior Taiko from Exeter. Both groups have a ten year history that includes performances on tv and at the Music for Youth School Proms. Kagemusha Junior Taiko are the only European youth group to have performed in Japan and their concerts attract a wide audience.
