New musicians welcome for the new season - Cornwall Youth Brass Band

The Cornwall Youth Brass Band is now inviting young brass players to apply for membership of the Band for the new season, which starts in September. Monthly Rehearsals are held at Truro College, with two Residential Courses at Christmas and Easter held at Truro High School for Girls.

With around seventy five musicians The Cornwall Youth Brass Band is the oldest County Youth Band in the UK, having been founded in 1955. Now a registered Charity, run by volunteers, it seeks to challenge young players by giving them the opportunity to work with the leading conductors and soloists in the brass band movement. In addition there is the chance to make new friends with whom to share the experiences of playing a wide range of music they may not encounter in their Parent Bands.

The Guest Conductors this season are Dr Robert Childs, Musical Director of The Cory Band, currently ranked No.1 in the world and Alan Withington, Professional Conductor of The Grimethorpe Colliery Band, famous for its appearance in the film Brassed Off. He will be joined by Grimethorpe’s Principal Euphonium, Michael Dodd.

Monthly Rehearsals in preparation for the four day Courses are taken by the team of local Tutors, who have all been members of the Band in their younger days and who recognise the benefit to the musicians and to their Parent Bands of this opportunity to broaden their musical horizons.

Interested applicants should be between ten and twenty one years old and have achieved a standard of at least Grade 4 to 5. Further details are available on the Band’s Web Site at, www.cybb.co.uk and can also be obtained direct from the Secretary, Phillip Hunt on 01752 843919.

It is like being given the keys to doors you didn't know existed - suddenly there are clear directions you can take your poetry in. Entry is free and can be done instantly online - what are you waiting for? Let your poem be heard!" Phoebe Power, Foyle Young Poet of the Year 2009

If you are 11-17 years of age, the Poetry Society’s Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award opens up exciting opportunities for your writing to be recognized and given the chance to flourish.

Since it began 13 years ago the award has identified some of the most exciting new voices in contemporary poetry. These include Caroline Bird, who after winning the award had her first collection of poetry published aged just 16, Jay Bernard whose first collections Your Sign is Cuckoo girl was published in 2008, and Richard O’Brien who set up the highly successful e-zine Pomegranate with other young writers. Many past winners can also be seen performing their work at festivals across the UK such as Latitude and the Big Chill.

It doesn’t just acknowledge this new talent - it provides an opportunity for this talent to flourish. There are two prizes available for the fifteen overall winners. The 14-17 year olds get the chance to attend a week long residential course at The Hurst in Shropshire, one of the prestigious Arvon Centres, where they will be tutored by this year’s judges Jane Draycott and Luke Kennard. The younger age range winners (11-14 year olds) will receive a visit to their school from a professional poet, followed by distance mentoring. The Award also incorprates a year-round programme of activity aimed at encouraging creativity and literacy in schools, providing poet-led residencies and a range of free resources including lesson plans and poetry book sets. It also champions and celebrates committed schools and teachers across the UK.

The deadline for the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is 31 July 2010. So what are you waiting for? Sending in a poem may be your first step toward becoming one of our great poets of the future.

'Give it a Go' scheme looking for activity providers for disadvanted children and young people

‘give it a go!’ is funding aimed at enabling children and young people who are at economic disadvantage to access out of school or extra curricular activities. Each child will receive an entitlement to a proportion of the funding dependant on numbers who are eligible.

‘give it a go!’ can directly help economically disadvantaged pupils to:
• increase their self-esteem, confidence and independence
• increase their aspirations
• take personal responsibility for themselves
• develop their social and life skills
• find inspiration or discover a talent that they might never otherwise have known.

Children and young people are able to take part in ‘give it a go!’ if they are:
• Eligible for free school meals
• Looked after children
• In receipt of families tax credits (proved by NHS exemption card)

The funding is available initially for one year until August 2011.

Funding can be spent on removing the barriers that prevent children who are at economic disadvantage from accessing out of school activities i.e. fees, travel costs, some equipment. A crucial part of ‘give it a go!’ is that it’s use must be directed by the child or young person.

The funding is for children and young people of statutory school age only i.e. 5-16 including young people who are home educated and those that stay on at a sixth form on a school site, but not an independent college.

Children can only take part in activities that have been registered with the Families Information Service. We have processes in place to register new settings so to widen the choice of activities available to children and young people.

Voice for teachers - Truro - 31 July 2010

In this workshop we will explore how resonance and power are related and how physical tension can block vocal resonance.

We will discover strategies for releasing the voice with simple but profound exercises that will help you to discover a strong awareness of the vibrations of sound in the body and the potentials for building a powerful resonant voice.

These will include simple warm-up techniques and exercises that you will be able to take away with you and develop at home.

We have developed this workshop in response to requests from people who have found themselves teaching in various situations and feel that they don't perhaps have the vocal skills that they need. Many of these people have indicated that voice work was not a part of their teacher training courses. The workshops is designed for anyone who works regularly with large groups and wants to develop their own vocal skills. It will also suit people who are interested in voice development generally.

We will tailor specific aspects of the workshop according to who joins us. We will certainly be looking at a number of strategies for 'holding a space'.

The workshop will draw on voice techniques and ideas from a broad range of sources including the principles of 'natural voice' and 'harmonic chant'

to contact us click here

Nicola trained in voice with Keith Yon at Dartington and since then has worked with a large number of voice teachers, from Linklater Master practitioners to Chant and Healing voice teachers. She has spent a significant amount of time working professionally in Outdoor Theatre forms and as such has developed a number of techniques for dealing with this vocally demanding area of performance. She is currently embarking on a voice journey with Howard Milner.

Ben has trained with Jill Purce and with Mara Kiek. He has been the recipient of an Arts Council grant to explore body/voice training principles and has performed with a number of dance and physical theatre companies where he has developed a working practice of body and voice performance.
We are both highly experienced teachers with a passion for further developing our craft, working across all levels of performer training. We are currently both Associate Lecturers with The University Of Plymouth

MA Art & Environment - October 2010 - Falmouth

For centuries artists have interpreted and represented the natural environment. It has provided materials and subject matter, as well as inspiration and knowledge.

In recent times - particularly since the growth of the environmental movement - there has been a dramatic change in our understanding of the many ways our society impacts upon the Earth. This awareness has galvanised around the fact that the relationship between humanity and our life-giving planet is in a critical state.

This change in knowledge has been reflected in contemporary art practice. MA Art & Environment, at UniversityCollege Falmouth, encourages a focused engagement with ecological and environmental issues. Designed to give you the skills, expertise and confidence to operate as a professional artist in this critical area of practice, the course will also enable you to develop strategies and practices that use art as a cultural agent - as a tool for knowledge, understanding and change.

Students on the course have opportunities to benefit from our relationship with Cape Farewell, The Eden Project and University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute.
