RiO - looking for three new ‘Cultivators’

Want to get culture moving in Cornwall?
Want to inspire, motivate and engage young people in culture?
Want to ruffle some cultural feathers?

Then we want you.

After a successful first wave in east Cornwall, Cultivate is branching out and is looking for new team members to really shake up cultural activity in the west.  A first of its kind approach to developing Cornwall’s culture, Cultivate gives young people the chance to realise their own ideas by exploring and creating exciting cultural opportunities. From filmmaking to dance, graffiti to band nights, Cultivate links young people to the wealth of talent and skills in Cornwall, providing them with the contacts, inspiration and know-how to lead a cultural revolution in their own community, from the ground up.

We are looking for three new ‘Cultivators’ – individuals charged with coordinating, motivating and inspiring Cultivate activity in Penzance, Portreath and Boslowick, Falmouth.
Key tasks include:
• Being the key point of contact for an area’s Cultivate project, and leading the project from conception to realisation.
• Working with the Cultivate team to organise gatherings and explore the ideas and aspirations of each community
• Communicating and working with key community members and organisations to unlock local potential, talent and opportunities
• Coordinating activity, planning logistics and sourcing skills and resources as and when necessary
• Feeding back on progress to the rest of the Cultivate team
• Working with filmmakers, photographers and writers to record the project’s happenings
• Working with the Cultivate team on content for the Cultivate website
• Getting excited about Cultivate and get others excited too

To find out more about becoming a Cultivator and playing a key part in Cornwall’s cultural revolution email us on cultivate@realideas.org

Zoo Art Fair 09 - deadline 4 August 2008

New Commission and Development Opportunity

Deadline Monday 4 August 12pm

This is an Arts Council England SW supported initiative, managed by a partnership of ProjectBase, University College Falmouth and Creative Skills.

We aim to commission up to seven Cornwall-based artists that challenges the current perception, both within and out of the county, of contemporary visual art in Cornwall, at Zoo Art Fair 2009.

The partnership, led by ProjectBase, will commission up to seven artists currently resident in Cornwall to produce work that responds to Zoo 2009 as a context rather than as a space. The work can be created in any art form, but must be contemporary in nature. The presentation at Zoo 2009 will be curated by Sara Black, Director of ProjectBase.

The commissions depend on the partnership’s application to Zoo Art Fair 2009 & further fundraising being successful. If that application is approved, the successful artists will be formally commissioned in February 2009 to produce new work by September 2009, for installation at Zoo Art Fair 2009 in October 2009.

Further information can be downloaded here or contact sara@projectbase.org.uk

Holifair film tent – Tunnel Vision – call for submissions

Now in it's third year, Holifair 8th - 10th August http://www.holifair.co.uk/ is a beautiful little festival with all the usual types of things you find going on at festivals but on a small scale. Held at Holifield Farm, Gweek near Helston, Cornwall.

I have been running a little digital cinema since the first year and we show a mixed content of environmental documentaries, shorts, funnies, local interest, animation, progressing into music with live video mixing later in the evenings. We will show almost anything that is in keeping with the theme of the event which is; 'Promoting green environmental issues in the community' or just good and with a West Country flavour.

Anyone wishing to sponsor us by loaning a large video projector would save the event some money as we usually hire from the Media Centre at the Uni.

This is not a competition, more a showcase of positive imagery. So, if you've got something that fits the bill and you'd like some free exposure,

ITV Fixers  - opportunity for 16-25 year olds

ITV Fixers is a major campaign across the ITV Meridian and West regions where young people (16-25) can take action on anything they feel strongly about, changing things for the better. Young people can “fix” anything so long as it’s something useful and helps someone else. It could be something practical, creative, sporty, campaigning.... anything. We are inviting young people to make a short film about their project which will be uploaded online onto the ITV local dedicated site and possibly shown on the ITV news over the next 18 months. We have no limit to the number of films that can be uploaded and we are expecting a diverse range of topics to be covered in all kinds of ways.

We have a New Media team who can offer help with filming and borrowing of equipment if it is needed and we endeavour to support all young people involved throughout the process. We obviously want the young people to feel pleased and proud of their achievements but we are not censoring any films submitted on grounds of quality – we want everyone to be included regardless of ability and we will do our best to make sure that this happens. We recognise that sometimes you will be working with young people who are not in our target age range but we are happy for you to develop projects that involve others alongside 16-25 year olds.

Everyone who participates is awarded a certificate and an ITV Fixers branded DVD of their film. We also offer to provide a reference for them outlining how they have personally been involved with ITV Fixers. We can work with you to help publicise what you do and ensure your young people get the most out of their involvement.

If you have any further questions feel free to get in touch or visit our website at www.itvfixers.com

What is ‘The Bhangra Project’?

The “Bhangra Project” is a spectacular new initiative from Asian Arts Agency for Bristol and beyond. The year-long project amalgamates a stunning programme of performances, exhibitions, new commissions, with talk, debates and arts workshops to explore the Bhangra Culture to its full depth.

Asian Arts Agency will be running a participatory Bhangra arts program parallel to the main performances and exhibitions program to provide learning opportunities for audiences from wider communities.

Art & Craft Stalls available at Falmouth Week Garden Party 14 August

Gyllyngdune Garden Restoration Project

This year we are making our annual Falmouth Week Garden Party bigger and better.

In addition to more music, activities and events for children, young people and families we would like to increase number of stalls, especially those selling local food, produce, plants, arts and crafts.

This is a really popular event as can attract hundreds of people. A similar event that ran at Fox Rose Hill in May attracted over 1000 people. We will be developing an event specific marketing campaign for the garden party and we are expecting the afternoon to be busy.

We have allocated 8 stalls for local artists and crafts people. Each stall is approximately 4 by 2 metres and we can provide large tables. The stalls will be under the veranda, so they will be sheltered and protected from any unsavoury weather.

The garden party is taking place at Gyllyngdune Garden, behind the Princess Pavilion, Falmouth on Thursday 14 August from 2 - 5 pm.

Stalls are £ 25 each.  Stalls are limited and will be booked on first come first served basis.  If you would like to book a stall, please e-mail me:

1. Your name
2. Company name if applicable
3. Address
4. Phone number
5. E-mail address
6. Details of work being sold, with a couple of images

We will ask for payment once the stalls have been confirmed

‘Art in Mental Health. A Foundation Course.’
What is the aim of the course?
This part time course introduces participants to key factors in working with visual art in a wide variety of health contexts and focussing on broad mental health issues.

Many of the concerns of potential employers in health, education, community and criminal justice contexts when inviting artists to work with people in those settings are also addressed. The course is informed by art therapy and emotional literacy perspectives.

When does the course run?
For 2008-09 over eight Fridays in Exeter: The course starts at 10.00am and finishes at 4.30pm.

More details can be found on the website, as well as a downloadable application form. Do contact us with any queries, we are always happy to discuss any aspect of the courses.
