A brave research project looking at the role of a cultural venue in educating children. This hasn’t happened yet so it is one to watch.
What is special:
The Project: What role does a children’s theatre have when it comes to ‘educating children’? How can this opportunity be used to explore and understand the essence of ‘school’ and the meaning of school community as well as the essence of cultural setting. The project aims to involve all school staff and children and their families in years 4 and 5 and the staff at the theatre, visiting artists, the theatre chaplain and 5x5x5 creativity. The class will move into the egg for half a term.
The anticipated short term outcomes are that the children will develop their learning, self esteem, motivation, questioning, relating to unknown adults and broaden their experiences. The egg staff will learn new ways of engaging with children and teachers and get to know them extremely well and teachers are invigorated.
The anticipated long term outcomes are that children who live near the egg will develop a personal relationship with the theatre and attend more and will also have a better relationship with school. Teachers may change their approach to make greater use of community resources and have higher morale. The school can sell itself as special because of its relationship with the egg and other partners
The residency begins in May 2012 and will be evaluated, then followed up by a second residency a year later.
