Cornish Comedy Western, QUICK SILVER, is on! 28-30 July 2008

Performed by a enthusiastic new theatre company, the fabulously named Dave's House, you'll find the show at the Burrell Theatre(1 Trennick Lane Truro) on Mon 28 - Wed 30th July, from 7.30pm.

Pitchside - A True West Theatre Production

A brand new comedy by a new professional Cornish theatre company True West will be touring Cornwall during July and August.

Pitchside is fast, fun, and very accessible, for all ages over eight, and concerns The Angels under 14 girls’ football team. It is their last game of the season and the Angels are fighting to avoid relegation. The action follows the players, but also their parents, and the extraordinary lengths they will go to to avoid ‘the drop’.

This is a play for those who love football, hate football, and everyone in between, but it is also a play about children and parents. Singers from all over Cornwall will be helping the terrace atmosphere along.

The play is written by Nick Whitby from St Just who has worked for Channel Four’s Emmy Award winning ‘Smack the Pony’, and wrote ‘To the Green Fields Beyond’, directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes at the Donmar Warehouse, London. His stage version of ‘To Be Or Not To Be’ will be opening on Broadway this October.

The actors all live and work in Cornwall and some will be familiar from their previous work with Miracle and other Cornish theatre groups.

Pitchside tours Cornwall from 17th July to 3rd August. Tickets available on the door. Details and tickets reserved on www.truewest.co.uk

One Small Step... One Giant Leap - innovative dance theatre

You are invited to the best party on the planet!!!

Anyone who’s anyone is there, and everyone else wants to be there.

Put on your glad rags and join us this summer as Royal William Yard becomes the spectacular setting for innovative dance theatre.

Produced by the Barbican Theatre and commissioned by Plymouth Summer Festival, performers have worked alongside scientists, artists and makers to develop an original promenade performance. The result is an exciting mix of carnival, visual spectacle and dance theatre and will be performed indoors and outdoors at Royal William Yard in Plymouth. At the height of festivities... an old man explodes from the future to the present. He is covered in the imprints of generations. With his crystal ball of pictures and a tumult of questions, he tries to make himself heard above the raucous music of today.

This dynamic dance theatre performance will take place at Royal William Yard on 24th , 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th & 31st July and 1 st August from 8:30pm

We would like all our patrons to help us reduce the carbon footprint of the performance. Why not get a boat, bus, cycle or walk to Royal William Yard and start to make a difference today!

The Lab – for 14-19 year olds interested in the arts at Exchange Gallery Penzance

Every Fortnight Thursdays 4.30-7.30pm
Exchange Gallery
Penzance

The Lab aims to be an autonomous space run by young people for young people and will enable 14 to 19 year olds with an interest in the arts, to become actively engaged in contemporary visual culture. Getting involved in The Lab will be a unique opportunity for young people to gain first hand experience of life as a practicing artist, designer, maker and/or curator. Lab members will design, deliver and curate an exhibition or event for the Engine Room at The Exchange.

The Lab builds on lessons learned from international models including Zone Moderna, Moderna Museet, Stockholm and Room 13, UK, plus a short pilot project developed by the gallery which worked with a ready-formed group of BTEC Art and Design students from Penwith College, with the support of Creative Skills. These students worked closely with artist Lucy Willow to design, deliver and curate an exhibition to launch the new education space at The Exchange. The result was a lively collection of young artists’ thoughts and ideas.

The Lab will initially use the Engine Room at The Exchange as its base whilst the gallery hopes to secure a dedicated space adjoining the gallery building in the near future.

The Lab will happen fortnightly on Saturdays.

Action for Children's Arts launches manifesto

Action for Children’s Arts, the UK's umbrella body on behalf of all arts organisations providing arts for and working with children, has launched the UK’s first ‘Manifesto for Children’s Arts’ at its conference at The Unicorn Theatre in London.

The delivery of the Manifesto was well-received by the packed house that consisted of senior government officials, politicians, school teachers, children’s rights workers, and delegates from all areas of the arts.

The Manifesto calls for government, political parties, schools Arts Councils, arts organisations, local authorities and the media to all help develop special policies for producing and promoting the arts to children and to work to raise the profile of this vital but often marginalised and under funded area. It is in direct accordance with Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which states that all world’s children are entitled to have access to the arts.

Innovative Live Arts Degrees to Feed Creative Industries

Cornwall College St Austell has launched two exciting University-level courses approved by the University of Plymouth, designed to meet the needs of the performing arts industry. Students and creative professionals from across the county now have local access to Live Arts Performance and Live Arts Management Foundation Degrees.

These unique courses offer dynamic paths into performing arts and creative industries and students from across the UK are likely to be attracted to study in Cornwall. Creative industries in the UK is purported to be worth £421 million a year and Cornwall alone employs over ten thousand people.

Based at Cornwall College’s The Keay Theatre, the two degrees interlink as students work as one training performance company. Performers and managers work alongside each other, with practicing professionals, to take responsibility for every aspect of performing in and managing a company. Students are encouraged to develop an entrepreneurial spirit towards professional and community events across the county and further a field.

Jenny Cleverley the programme manager explained; “Live Arts is not a genre in its own right but a new, collaborative way of working – a fusion of experimental practices to create new work. In a post-modern, media-rich world, barriers are being broken down between all genres of performing arts. There are increasingly innovative and exciting opportunities for creative work - these live arts programmes are designed to feed and support the country’s creative industries.”

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College said: “Foundation Degrees are innovative University-level qualifications developed with employers, so they fit perfectly into the world of work. They allow students to boost their professional development. We are offering a wide range of University-level courses across the College and with the development of the Student Union, it’s an exciting place to study.”

Good news for the Arts from the Comprehensive Spending Review

Government investment in the arts is set to be boosted over the next three years, with the announcement of an extra £50millon going to the Arts Council England by 2011.

The organisation's funding will rise from £417 million this year to £467 million in 2010/11, a real-terms increase year-on-year of 1.1 per cent (or 12 per cent in cash terms across the whole period). Grant aid to England's national museums and galleries will increase from £302 million this year to £332 million in 10/11, an increase of slightly above inflation.

The funding comes from DCMS's settlement in the 2007 spending review, and makes clear the Government's commitment to supporting excellence in the arts in this country.
James Purnell said:

"The spending review settlement is an excellent deal for arts, museums and galleries in this country, with real terms rises across the sector, plus additional investment through the Arts Council.

"The extra £50m that the Arts Council will receive by 2010/11 will ensure that artists, performers and companies get the chance to continue producing world-class work for growing audiences.

"Our arts and culture matter. They are a key part of the life and identity of our country, and that's why the Government has invested heavily in them since 1997. This country can hold its own on the international stage, producing brilliant, world-class and groundbreaking work. This year's settlement will help ensure our arts sector - one of the nation's greatest success stories - can go on to achieve even more."

Local authorities now required to provide positive activities for young people

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has issued a statement that from the beginning of this year all local authorities will be expected to secure access for young people to 'positive activities', including youth clubs, sports facilities and art projects. The Government will provide £4.5 million in each of the financial years 2006-7 and 2007-8 for local authorities to develop and publicise local things to do and places to go. This is alongside the DfES' £115 million Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds, which provide money for youth-led activities, and to create or improve places for young people to go within their community.

'Positive activities' might include sports clubs, cultural events, volunteering schemes or art projects but the scope is broad and activities can be educational or recreational - so long as they contribute to young people's well-being. Local authorities will also be expected to consult young people on activities and facilities currently available to them as well as any new ones they would like to see in the area, to publicise these, and to keep the information up-to-date.

Extra funding for music and singing for young people

At the Music Manifesto's 'State of Play' festival held on 16 and 17 January, the Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, announced a £10 million to boost music and singing for young people. The extra funding comes as part of the Government's announcement of how it will deliver on the next stage of the Music Manifesto, which was launched in 2004. The £10 million is in addition to £25 million committed for instrumental tuition next year.

Mr Johnson described music as a worthwhile activity in its own right and a 'powerful learning tool which can build children's confidence, teamwork and language skills' and improve educational achievement generally. The Music Manifesto is a joint initiave between the National Campaign for the Arts and Dance UK.
