Embark: Ferry Art 2012 – Call For Artists‏ – deadline 2 March 2012

Embark: Ferry Art celebrates its sixth year thanks to continued support from Arts Council England, University College Falmouth and King Harry Ferry. Curated by artist Charlotte Williams and illustrator Anna Cattermole, FOTONOW CIC (who managed the initiative) are looking for seven emerging artists to exhibit on a monthly basis on-board the
King Harry Ferry through-out the Summer and Autumn of 2012. We have also got the additional support from Truro Arts and The Courtyard Deli this year, offering exhibition spaces for the artist residency.

Artists’ work (existing or realising new material) should explore contemporary issues that are pertinent within the region; including environmental, social and economical ideas.

Proposals should be no more than 300-words and should outline the potential of the artists’ practice to relate visually and conceptually with this individually rural setting. The
artist will also need to consider how the work will engage with an audience of over 500 passengers each day, who may not normally visit a traditional gallery space.

The final work should be effectively reproduced in two-dimensional print form, due to all works being printed onto a panel for use in frames on-board the ferry. All media is welcome for submission.

The team at FOTONOW CIC are delighted to continue to sustain the development of Embark as it provides a perfect and much needed platform to support early career artists and their practice, whilst also presenting the local audience with an opportunity to reflect on current issues.

Final artworks will also appear on all Fal River Links services as postcards, advertising the main King Harry Ferry shows. The project is keen to support emerging graduate artists and so would continue to welcome submissions from alumni and final year students at University College Falmouth.

Selected artists will also be invited to run an art-workshop within the community during their exhibition; allowing local schools, young people and the wider community to engage further with the project. This will be optional and FOTONOW CIC and University College Falmouth will offer assistance to artists with less experience in running such
sessions.

Developing on our artist residency programme, we will be offering two artists the chance to spend three days exploring the local rural landscape, followed by an exhibition at either The Courtyard Deli, Falmouth or Truro Arts in Truro.

Work Required:
> Exhibition Proposal (300 words)
> Artist CV
> CD with 10 images (JPG) of works proposed for showing (although final show may consist of new works if time and commission fee allows)

Send to: ‘Embark Submission’, FOTONOW CIC, c/o King Harry Ferry, Feock, Nr Truro, Cornwall, TR3 6QJ
Deadline: Monday 2nd March 2012

The following opportunities will be paid: Embark Exhibiting Artist, Artist In Residence and Workshop Facilitators. (This is subject to securing funding)

9.45 am- 4 pm

This one day course is essential training for anyone working within youth arts, but especially for those who are working directly with young people at risk. Undertaking practical workshops and activities with young people requires a broad understanding of youth culture and the issues surrounding young people’s lives. There are added pressures of working directly with young people who are already or may be at risk of social exclusion, one of which is having the skills, knowledge and experience to be able to manage their behaviour effectively and responsively.

This course will discuss the practical aspects of behaviour management, look specifically at health and safety issues and risk assessment and will aim to promote a style of engaging with young people that encourages positive behaviour.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources.  There is currently a special rate of £75 available on this course.

For more information, or to make a booking please visit the Artswork website: www.artswork.org.uk/training, or contact the Professional Development Manager via:  rachel@artswork.org.uk or call 02380 332491.  To subscribe to ENYAN visit: www.artswork.org.uk/enyan-home.

Nowhere Island – Resources for schools

Nowhereisland, one of this year’s most ambitious art projects is a floating island sculpture by artist Alex Hartley.   The island is made from material originating from a newly revealed island in the Arctic. Alex was the first person to stand on this territory and, with permission, brought the material back to the UK to make the artwork. During the journey to the UK,
Nowhereisland was declared a new nation with citizenship open to all. This summer it will arrive in Weymouth, accompanied by an online mobile museum The Embassy, for the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on 25th July 2012.

Resources for schools include an animation made by KS1 and KS2 pupils, open citizenship, conversation starters and images, a competition (see details here), summary sheets of key themes and ideas for classroom activities and a logbook of the expedition.

Trained in textiles, ceramics and printmaking, I produce my own work, teach textiles and mixed media for adult education and do art and craft workshops with children. I’ve been involved in longer residencies, one day workshops and short 1/2hr sessions for local authorities, schools and Barnardos. I’ve also worked on countryside and heritage projects helping children to interpret nature and their environment using art as a medium.

I’m happy to do one day workshops and longer residencies. I’m very adaptable with a wide range of skills and will work on any theme, fitting in to National Curriculum guidelines if required.

I have over 20 years experience teaching textile techniques from fabric painting and printing for banners and bunting to more elaborate sewing and world textile techniques for clothes, costumes and quilts.

I also facilitate the making of willow sculptures large and small, and I am no stranger to puppets.

I have worked in schools, preschools, day centres, health care and community centres and festivals.

My work usually involves a story, can involve lots of maths (patchwork geometry), is colourful and creative and participants in my workshops have lots of fun while making wonderful stuff.
