Painting workshops

These sessions can be run very successfully at either KS1 or 2 with groups of up to six in the morning and six in the afternoon( because of the size of the work , space does not generally allow for larger group sizes. The workshops give children a (possibly once in a lifetime!) opportunity to work on a very large scale, which we have observed to be both liberating and challenging. By liaising fully with staff before sessions, we are able to agree visual source material which will support current topical work so that the resulting large scale images allow for exciting classroom or corridor exhibitions with a strong curricular link. Exhibitions at the above mentioned schools have transformed communal spaces and are often commented on by visitors to school - both parents and professionals. They have also raised children’s confidence and encouraged them to believe in themselves as artists.

Drawing workshops

By using a series of well tested drawing games (grid drawings,
Mystery object drawings, fast + moving figure drawings, directional light source, still lives) I engage children with the fascination of the visual world in ways which take the fear out of the process and make it fun and fast moving . Suitable for KS2, these workshops run best as whole class sessions with staff present , as the techniques demonstrated will – if adopted and used regularly by class teachers themselves- dramatically improve observational drawing skills in this age group.

The tutors

Drawing workshops are run by Penny Macbeth. The Painting workshops are run by Penny along with either Robert Bradford ,Carol Whibley, or Susie Dickens because we have found that this provides full and adequate support for the process given the scale and therefore the heavy call on materials/process support. Because Susie is trained to work with
special needs students , and Robert is trained to work with
behaviourally challenging groups we are able to offer specialist support in these areas if required. All four tutors are CRB checked
