A Winter Feast of Fairy Tales

Everyone loves a good fairy tale with its blend of innocence and darkness, memorable characters who are faced with impossible dilemmas and who devise extraordinary solutions or don’t …

So while Kneehigh is performing Red Shoes in Australia, Miracle is touring Beauty and the Beast (from Mars) and the Hall for Cornwall has just put Sleeping Beauty back under wraps, drama departments in Cornish Schools have been unearthing well known and little known fairy tales for a spectacular showcase at the Hall for Cornwall on Monday January 24th at 2.00 and 7.30pm.

Seventeen secondary schools and two primary schools from across Cornwall will each perform an extract from a fairy tale of their choice in either a matinee or evening performance. The stories will be a rich mix of scripted and devised storytelling inspired by well known tales such as The Twelve Princesses, and The Juniper Tree by Carol Ann Duffy, to Cornish inspired tales from Roche Rock and others from around the world such as The Pot that had Babies and a Burmese Tale called The Promise.

This Showcase is a celebration both of these fabulous tales but also of young Cornish talent and the creativity in Cornish Schools. We want to encourage the general public to attend this event to experience the incredible ability and energy of these young performers. Why not avoid the mid winter rain and cold and get warm physically and spiritually in a matinee or evening performance of fine storytelling!

This is the second Cornwall drama showcase, last year was Darke Visions, celebrating the life and work of Cornish playwright Nick Darke. It was so successful that it has become an annual event but with a different theme each time. The showcase is managed by Kernow Education Arts Partnership as part of the Arts Offer schools with Cornwall Learning.

Of last year’s showcase Steve Mulcahy Headteacher at Richard Lander School, Truro wrote:

This was a hugely impressive performance, involving schools from across the county… I hope for some of the students taking part, it has lit a spark within them which will help define their own futures.

Tickets for both performances from The Hall for Cornwall box Office 01872 262466.
