The Nick Darke Award 2010 - deadline 12 March 2010

The Nick Darke award was conceived in 2006 by Jane Darke and Cornwall County Council with the aim of celebrating and supporting a writer. It aims to achieve this by awarding the writer a sum of money which will allow time to work, and offer some support through the development process.

Nick Darke wrote in many forms but earned his living in the world of theatre, screen and radio. As this award is intended to contribute financially to the life of a writer, we have decided to make the award in one of these disciplines.

We are asking writers to submit work that pursues an environmental theme – to reflect Nick Darke’s lifelong commitment to this issue, and within one of the following four disciplines:

The Nick Darke Award has been developed by Nick Darke’s wife, the artist and film maker Jane Darke, with the support of Nick Darke’s family. It is funded by University College Falmouth’s School of Media and The Works (Dance & Theatre Cornwall Ltd.), and supported by KEAP (Kernow Education Arts Partnership). It is being administered by University College Falmouth.

THE BRIDPORT PRIZE welcomes story and poetry entries from writers over 16 years old. This is a wonderful opportunity for those students who enjoy writing to compete against both professional and amateur writers from all over the world. In 2009 a sixth former's story was shortlisted (a shortlist of 80 from an entry of several thousands) by our judge, Ali Smith. A fantastic result for the student!

The Bridport Prize is the richest open writing competition in the English language – with £5000 first prize for a short story (of up to 5000 words); and £5000 first prize for a poem (of up to 42 lines). A new category of Flash Fiction (a short, short story of under 250 words) is being introduced in 2010. First prize of £1,000.

The Bridport Prize is also known as a tremendous literary stepping stone – the first step in the careers of writers such as Kate Atkinson, Tobias Hill, Carol Ann Duffy and Helen Dunmore.

Anyone over 16 years can enter – so long as the work is previously unpublished. It costs £7 per story, £6 per poem or £5 per flash fiction and the closing date is 30th June 2010. Entries can be made by post or online:

Young Brits at Art 2010: Turning young people's vision into art

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is re-launching its Young Brits at Art awards, inviting 11 to 19 year olds from all walks of life to express their vision of this year’s theme: ‘What would the world look like if we lived without prejudice?’

This academic year, Young Brits at Art offers new resources for educators which complement and reinforce learning under the National Curriculum in England and Wales and the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland. The resources aim to model good practice in facilitating young people's creative work exploring equality and human rights. They are also designed to help educators and group leaders organise activities to support young people’s entries to the Young Brits at Art awards.

The awards can benefit young people in schools, youth clubs, Connexions services, pupil referral units, faith groups, libraries, leisure centres and other local council facilities. Charities and museums can use the awards as part of their existing youth programmes. Individual young people can also develop their own artwork and enter independently.

After the success of the first year of the awards in 2009, Young Brits at Art 2010 includes new categories such as photography, sculpture and motion animation, as well as its previous sections for painting and drawings. Its goal is to get more schools and youth centres involved by providing new and innovative resources that support the teaching of arts and citizenship as well as ongoing work with young people outside the school system. It will also host 45 artist-led workshops to support those taking part, with a particular emphasis on young people from disabled, hard to reach and vulnerable backgrounds.

Craft Club – a national campaign for craft in schools

Craft Club is a national campaign for craft in schools. It aims to unite skilled and enthusiastic craftspeople with children and young people through after-school clubs. Working together they can engage learners beyond the curriculum and enthuse them about making.

Crafts Club believes that the future of craft lies in nurturing talent – children and young people must be able to learn about craft at school and have access to excellent teaching throughout their education. It offers advice, resources and support to inspire teachers, pupils and volunteers to set up clubs during lunchtimes or after-hours in their school or venue.

Cornwall Secondary Music Conference Resources

Cornwall Music Secondary Conference on 5 January was a great success bringing together secondary Heads of Music, Music teachers, Cornwall Learning Music staff and community musicians for the first time.

We heard inspiring case studies about the way different schools engage with their young people through music from The Roseland, Humphry Davy and Brannel, experienced Japanese Music with Adrain Freedman and Cornish Music with CUMPAS, and learnt more about Wider Opportunities and Sing Up. The day was shortened due to impending snow, but we finished with a massed sing of The Lobster Song by Nick Darke and Jim Carey to flag up the resources for teachers as part of the Darke Visions festival.

The Music Forum is holding a half day INSET on composition with Andy Baker and the mini BSO strings on 14 May (date and venue to be confirmed). Places will be limited but do come adn join us!

Darke Visions – events listings so far

Darke Visions is an umbrella or a framework allowing for all kinds of responses to Nick Darke’s work. There is no artistic director - rather there is a steering group and co-ordination via KEAP and The Works, and individuals and organisations are making offers and proposals under the framework.

Each section is self-sufficient but hopefully enhanced by being part of the festival. And the whole aim is raise the profile of Nick as a man of Cornwall and a fine playwright and film maker.

Amanda Harris of KEAP, one of the organisations involved in developing the ideas behind the festival, says: “Darke Visions has really captured people’s imaginations and offers are coming from all sorts of quarters. It’s very inspiring!”

March 09 – July 2010
• A huge body of education work – including a countywide secondary art project inspired by the Wrecking Season, a primary art project around Bodmin and Looe also inspired by the Wrecking Season, composer Jim Carey re-working some of the songs to be made available to school and community choirs, performances in schools of Nick’s plays and links to GCSE exams, using nick’s plays to inspire choreography. The whole being to ensure teachers can easily access Nick’s work as a resource for inspiring young people.

Also details yet to be confirmed for:

• A touring production of excerpts from Nick’s canon of work

• An evening of his overtly political work including film and live elements

• A massed celebratory event on the beach with choirs from all over Cornwall in summer 2010

• A tour by Cscape Dance Company including ‘Enjoy Your Stay’ inspired by Nick’s work

…plus many other possible productions, both professional and community, that are still in the early planning stages!

A new piece of print is being developed alongside the website www.nickdarke.net/darkevisions that will help to promote the festival and events as they are confirmed. Meanwhile for more information please contact Amanda Harris at KEAP 01872 275187 or Laura Martin on 07966 862630.
