Storyteller David Heathfield has developed a workshop to celebrate National Tree week 26 November to 7 December 2008.
Age Range: KS1/ KS2
Event Aims and Description:
To bring students close to trees growing nearby, both physically and imaginatively through stories, and to give them an intimate insight into traditional folklore associated with trees and the magic living in and around them…Oak, Beech, Birch, Ash, Holly, Apple, Pear…
To create new stories inspired by the stories told and features of the environment.
To develop speaking and listening skills.
Two key outcomes of Every Child Matters: Enjoying and achieving and Making a positive contribution are achieved in this workshop, which has the following stages:

Extended Services & the Arts evaluation report
KEAP's Extended Services & the Arts programme looked at ways in which the creative and cultural sector could impact on Extended Services.
Origins of KEAP’s extended services programme
KEAP’s extended services programme has been funded by the Cornwall Arts Partnership (a partnership of the county and districts arts’ offices and the Arts Council – all districts are signed up to it except Carrick) with match funding from Creative Partnerships. It was delivered by KEAP, Creative Partnerships, RiO and The Works with the Hall for Cornwall, Tate St Ives and North Cornwall Activities Network.
The aims:
• To ensure that the arts are firmly embedded into the extended services core offer.
• To explore ways in which the arts can support the extended services agenda and the opportunities which this can offer for the schools, artists and partner organisations, within both the arts and the wider community.
• To explore the impact the cultural sector can have on the extended services provision.
The programme was delivered through three strands – Support, Information and
Signposting, Training, and Action Research.

Action for Children's Arts launches manifesto
Action for Children’s Arts, the UK's umbrella body on behalf of all arts organisations providing arts for and working with children, has launched the UK’s first ‘Manifesto for Children’s Arts’ at its conference at The Unicorn Theatre in London.
The delivery of the Manifesto was well-received by the packed house that consisted of senior government officials, politicians, school teachers, children’s rights workers, and delegates from all areas of the arts.
The Manifesto calls for government, political parties, schools Arts Councils, arts organisations, local authorities and the media to all help develop special policies for producing and promoting the arts to children and to work to raise the profile of this vital but often marginalised and under funded area. It is in direct accordance with Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which states that all world’s children are entitled to have access to the arts.

Extended Services & the Arts
The first phase of KEAP’s programme exploring how the cultural sector can support the Extended Services core offer is coming to an end with some great results and stories. Here’s a taster of some of the quite different projects that took place.
Looe- Positive Touch
Over the last 5 months, over 400 young people, parents and teachers in the Looe area have had the opportunity to take part in an exciting and innovative programme of work built around emotional health and wellbeing. Using the peer to peer Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) as its foundation (www.misa.org.uk) , practitioners Mary Gander and Lin Hudson worked with young people, their teachers and parents to explore emotional literacy and positive touch, taking the children on imaginative and creative journeys through sensory worlds using touch, movement, music, visualisation, visual arts and story.
Phoenix Theatre at Penryn College
Penryn College worked with actor and playwright Jon Welch through their after school drama club. This quickly became more than a club and was renamed ‘Phoenix Theatre’. Sarah Childs, Head of Creative Arts at the College explained the impact of this work on the college and the students.
“From the outset this project excited the students and fully engrossed them in the opportunity on offer. Students quickly realised that the play was going to be written for them giving a real sense of purpose and creativity. To work with a professional playwright from the initial concept of the theme right through to its final performance was undoubtedly a unique experience for all our students and one they felt passionately engaged with.
Brannel Young Theatre Goers
Working with eight students from Brannel School and the Hall for Cornwall, KEAP through support from the Cornwall Arts Partnership and The Works, have enabled a two way process looking at the perceptions of young people’s theatregoing. The Brannel group have seen six performances at the Hall for Cornwall and been encouraged to discuss these shows and give critical feedback to the venue on their experience. They were challenged to market a seventh show to their friends and successfully brought a group of over eighty to see Dodgy Clutch’s Elephant- this was entirely organised by the students. The Hall for Cornwall is pleased with the audience development potential of this process. The venue has also begun to take a critical look at the experience of theatre going for young people and how box office, front of house and catering all contribute to the experience, as well as the show itself.
The young people have grown in confidence, knowledge and levels of criticality and are beginning to take risks with their choice of theatregoing. They now better understand the financial imperatives of running a large venue and its broad remit but remain resolute in their goal of influencing HfC to programme work to appeal to teenagers. As a consequence of the project they have been invited by the Chief Executive to help programme a week in the Spring season.
North Cornwall After School Art Clubs
Jon Bell, Extended Services Coordinator for North Cornwall, tells us about the trials and successes of running art clubs in North Cornwall.
“The scheme to develop after-school art clubs grew from a necessity under the Extended Schools requirements for schools to deliver access to arts and cultural activities both after school and in the holidays. In the North Cornwall area there was very little obvious means for this to be developed. Having received an indication from KEAP that they were interested in working with local artists in an after-school context, there was therefore, little hesitation in responding positively.
The scheme has worked very well, and by the end of the summer term most schools will have received at least one five week art club programme and in many cases more than one. Headteachers report considerable satisfaction with the scheme. The only difficulty has been a delay in implementing the programme in a number of schools simply due to lack of available artists. So, our next challenge is to recruit more artists from the North Cornwall area to make this networked resource for the schools really work…if you’re an artist in North Cornwall and you’re interested in running after school art clubs then please contact us!”
Please contact Helen Reynolds on helen.reynolds@keap.org.uk for more info and an application form. Please note artists need to live in the North Cornwall area.

ITV Fixers opportunities for young people 16-25
ITV Fixers is a major campaign across the ITV Meridian and West regions where young people (16-25) can take action on anything they feel strongly about, changing things for the better. Young people can “fix” anything so long as it’s something useful and helps someone else. It could be something practical, creative, sporty, campaigning.... anything. We are inviting young people to make a short film about their project which will be uploaded online onto the ITV local dedicated site and possibly shown on the ITV news over the next 18 months. We have no limit to the number of films that can be uploaded and we are expecting a diverse range of topics to be covered in all kinds of ways.
We have a New Media team who can offer help with filming and borrowing of equipment if it is needed and we endeavour to support all young people involved throughout the process. We obviously want the young people to feel pleased and proud of their achievements but we are not censoring any films submitted on grounds of quality – we want everyone to be included regardless of ability and we will do our best to make sure that this happens. We recognise that sometimes you will be working with young people who are not in our target age range but we are happy for you to develop projects that involve others alongside 16-25 year olds.
Everyone who participates is awarded a certificate and an ITV Fixers branded DVD of their film. We also offer to provide a reference for them outlining how they have personally been involved with ITV Fixers. We can work with you to help publicise what you do and ensure your young people get the most out of their involvement.

Tate online course in artists’ techniques
The Artists' Techniques and Methods course will introduce you to a number of key works in Tate's collection and examine the techniques the artists used to create their work. You will look at a range of techniques from drawing, watercolour, collage and oil painting. The course is divided into six units. Each unit examines different artists in Tate's collection and looks at how they created their work. The units contain video clips and step-by-step guides to using the techniques to create your own art works at home.
The course costs £20 and is available through the Tate website at www.tate.org.uk/learnonline/onlinecourses/artiststechniques

Everybody Writes
Everybody Writes is a web-based resource that offers classroom teachers innovative ideas and practical resources to get primary pupils and secondary students excited about writing. The Everybody Writes approach is about exploring writing beyond the classroom and taking it into the playground, communities and even the workplace. Everybody Writes encourages schools to try out new and interesting ways of initiating writing and to offer their young people a real audience for their writing. The project is run in partnership by Booktrust and The National Literacy Trust and funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
We have a new News and Events page on the site where I am collating opportunities for teacher inset, competitions and opportunities for children’s writing and I tend to want to advertise things at least a month before they happen, just so teachers have enough time to book up.
I’m also always on the lookout for examples of exciting writing projects being run in schools, so if you have anything of that nature going on it would be great to hear about it. It can be projects that have happened already maybe?

Tate St Ives Winter Season Exhibitions 2008
Heimo Zobernig and the Tate Collection
4 October 2008 – 11 January 2009
Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig (b1958) is one of the most significant artists working in Europe today. Over the last twenty five years he has exhibited extensively all over the world creating a considerable body of work that includes sculpture, video, painting, installation, architectural intervention and performance. He has collaborated with artists including Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen and Franz West and was included in Documenta X, Documenta 11 and the 49th Venice Biennale. This exhibition at Tate St Ives will be the first time his work has been shown in the UK: it tours to the Centro de Arte Moderna at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon in January 2009.
Much of Zobernig’s work critically engages with various modern art movements, including abstraction, constructivism, minimalism, post-minimalism and conceptual art, as well as with architecture, design and theatre. He appropriates various art histories in order to question the ideological position and conditions which underpin them, subverting and reinterpreting them with a lightness of touch and an economy of material, means and methodology that is at turns playful, dry, witty, unsettling and disarming.
Opening hours: March–October daily 10.00–17.20, last admission 17.00
November–February, Tuesday–Sunday 10.00–16.20, last admission 16.00
Admission: £5.75; £3.25 concessions; free to under 18s and Members
